Meet Our Mouse House Cat: Why We Love British Shorthairs

Life with Pudding, Maileg mice & a little bit of mischief

There is something wonderfully magical about a British Shorthair cat. Perhaps it is their round teddy-bear faces, their soft velvet coats or the calm little way they sit quietly watching the world go by like they know a secret you do not.

Our family’s British Shorthair, Pudding, is now just over twelve months old and has officially become part of Mouse House Collective life. He supervises miniature decorating, naps near the Mouse Mansion and occasionally attempts to become part of the display himself — much to the concern of the Maileg mice.

Here are five reasons we think British Shorthairs bring a little extra magic into everyday life.

1. They Have the Sweetest Personalities

British Shorthairs are calm, gentle and quietly affectionate. Pudding is never overly demanding but somehow always nearby. He follows the family from room to room like a fluffy little shadow, often choosing the softest corner near the Mouse Mansion to curl up in.

Unlike some energetic breeds, British Shorthairs bring a peaceful presence to a home. They seem perfectly suited to cosy afternoons, cups of tea and tiny, whimsical worlds.

And yes… he absolutely watches the Maileg mice.

We are fairly certain he believes they are real.

2. They Look Like Living Storybook Cats

Everything about a British Shorthair feels charmingly storybook-like. Their round eyes, plush coats and slightly serious expressions make them look as though they stepped straight out of an old English tale.

Pudding especially looks at home beside:

  • tiny Maileg furniture
  • miniature bookshelves
  • soft linen cushions
  • little lantern lights

In fact, Maileg even created a sweet grey cat that reminds us so much of him. Seeing the miniature cat beside our real-life Pudding makes the whole Mouse House feel even more magical.

Sometimes fantasy and real life blend together beautifully.

3. They Are Curious (and Occasionally Mischievous)

While British Shorthairs are known for being relaxed, they are also incredibly curious.

Pudding likes to inspect every new miniature piece that arrives. A tiny chair? Inspected. Miniature bread loaf? Sniff tested. Freshly styled mouse bedroom? Fully supervised.

Every now and then we discover:

  • a tiny rug slightly moved
  • a miniature blanket mysteriously on the floor
  • a mouse family “visited” overnight

And once… only once… Pudding somehow ended up halfway inside the Mouse Mansion itself looking extremely pleased with himself.

The Maileg mice were not impressed.

4. They Fit Beautifully Into Family Life

British Shorthairs are wonderfully adaptable family cats. They enjoy company without being overwhelming and seem to understand the rhythm of a home.

Pudding loves:

  • sitting near us while we create
  • watching rainy afternoons through the window
  • quiet evenings in the lounge room
  • gentle attention from visitors
  • warm laundry baskets

He has become part of our home in the same way the Mouse House has — bringing comfort, warmth and little moments of joy into everyday life.

5. They Add Magic to Everyday Moments

Perhaps the best reason to own a British Shorthair is the feeling they bring into a home.

There is something deeply comforting about hearing soft paws nearby while styling miniatures or writing blog posts. Pudding has become part of the creative spirit of Mouse House Collective.

He reminds us that whimsy is not only found in tiny furniture or miniature worlds.

Sometimes it is found in:

  • a sleepy cat beside a dollhouse
  • tiny paw prints near the Maileg mice
  • soft purring during late-night decorating
  • the quiet joy of creating a cosy home

And honestly… every Mouse Mansion probably needs a cat nearby keeping watch over the mice.

Even if the mice are slightly nervous about it.
