How the Press Flowers For Your Mouse House

How the Press Flowers For Your Mouse House

Preserve little blooms and create lasting memories for your Mouse House and beyond.

There is something magical about preserving a flower long after it has finished blooming. A pressed flower captures a moment in time – a walk through the garden, a special occasion or simply a bloom that caught your eye on a sunny afternoon.

At Mouse House Collective, we love incorporating nature into our tiny worlds. Pressed flowers can be used to create miniature artwork, decorate journals, embellish gift tags or simply be treasured as keepsakes. They add a touch of cottage charm and help bring the beauty of the garden indoors.

Over the years, we have pressed many flowers at home, but two of our favourites are pansies and lavender. Pansies retain their beautiful colours and delicate markings, while lavender dries wonderfully and keeps its lovely fragrance for months.

Why Press Flowers?

Flower pressing is one of the simplest and most rewarding garden crafts. It requires very little equipment and transforms fresh blooms into lasting treasures.

Pressed flowers are perfect for:

  • Decorating journals and scrapbooks
  • Creating handmade cards
  • Framing botanical artwork
  • Decorating gift tags
  • Preserving flowers from special occasions
  • Adding tiny details to your Mouse House displays

The Best Flowers for Pressing

While many flowers can be pressed successfully, some varieties work particularly well.

Our favourites include:

  • Pansies
  • Violas
  • Lavender
  • Daisies
  • Baby's breath
  • Ferns
  • Small roses
  • Cosmos
  • Queen Anne's Lace

Choose flowers that are freshly picked and free from moisture for the best results.

How to Press Flowers

What You'll Need

  • Fresh flowers
  • Absorbent paper or baking paper
  • Heavy books or a flower press
  • Patience

Step 1: Harvest Your Flowers

Pick flowers in the morning after the dew has dried but before the heat of the day arrives. This helps preserve their colour and shape.

Step 2: Prepare Your Flowers

Remove excess stems and gently arrange the flowers in the shape you would like them to dry.

Step 3: Press

Place the flowers between sheets of absorbent paper and carefully position them inside a heavy book or flower press.

Ensure the flowers are not touching one another.

Step 4: Wait

Leave the flowers to press for two to four weeks.

The exact time will depend on the flower variety and moisture content.

Step 5: Create

Once fully dried, carefully remove the flowers and use them in your favourite projects.

Creating Mouse House Magic

One of our favourite ways to use pressed flowers is in miniature displays and tiny framed artworks for our Mouse House scenes.

Pressed pansies look beautiful displayed in miniature frames, while lavender can be tucked into tiny baskets, journals or decorative displays throughout the Mouse House.

Small details like these help create the storytelling charm that makes miniature worlds feel truly special.

A Simple Hobby with Lasting Rewards

In a fast-paced world, flower pressing encourages us to slow down and appreciate the beauty around us.

Whether you're preserving pansies from your garden, drying lavender from a favourite plant or collecting blooms on a family walk, each pressed flower tells a story.

Sometimes the smallest treasures become the most meaningful.

If you create something using pressed flowers, we'd love to see it.
