Mouse size or Miniature size? What's the difference, and can you mix the two?

Welcome to Mouse House Sizing School, where our very helpful Maid Mouse, approximately 15 cm tall, is our guide to understanding the different Maileg furniture sizes.

We’ve created Mouse House Sizing School to make choosing Maileg furniture in Australia a little easier, with real side-by-side comparisons photographed here at Mouse House Collective.

The simplest way to remember it is:

Mouse size is the smaller scale.

Miniature is the larger scale.

Throughout our Sizing School, Maid Mouse will stand beside both versions so you can see the difference for yourself — from toilets and bathtubs to toasters, lamps, kitchens, wardrobes, couches, prams and strollers.

As a general guide, the smaller Mouse pieces are designed around the Maileg mice, while the larger Miniature pieces are particularly lovely with Size 1 and 2 rabbits and bunnies.

But here's the important part: these aren't rules.

Some pieces are wonderfully interchangeable, and sometimes we actually prefer the size we're not supposed to choose.

Our Miniature lamp is a perfect example. We love its slightly oversized look with the mice. It gives the room a wonderfully cosy, storybook feel and, to us, looks just right.

The larger Miniature pieces can also be easier for smaller hands to hold, move and play with.

So Mouse House Sizing School isn't about telling you which one you have to buy.

It's about showing you the difference, side by side, so you can choose what feels right for your own little Maileg world. 🐭🤍

Lesson One: The Toilet 🚽

Every house needs the essentials… even a mouse house.

And the toilet is a great place to start our Sizing School.

Placed side by side with Maid Mouse, you can immediately see the difference between the smaller Mouse toilet and the larger Miniature toilet.

The Mouse toilet is neat, tiny and beautifully proportioned beside Maid Mouse. The Miniature version is noticeably roomier and has a little more presence.

For smaller hands, that extra size can also make the Miniature toilet easier to handle during play.

Which would we choose?

This one really comes down to the size of your house, the characters who live there and which look you prefer.

And if your mouse would like a rather grand toilet, we're certainly not going to argue.

Lesson Two: The Bathtub 🛁

After a busy day at Mouse House, even Maid Mouse deserves a bath.

Again, our two bathtubs show just how much difference there can be between Mouse and Miniature sizing.

The smaller bath gives the mice a sweet, cosy little bathroom, while the larger Miniature bath creates something altogether more luxurious.

This is also one of those pieces where we think both scales can work beautifully with mice.

Do you want a perfectly petite mouse bathroom or a gloriously oversized tub to sink into?

Maid Mouse will let you decide.

Lesson Three: The Toaster 🍞

Breakfast is a serious business at Mouse House.

The Mouse toaster is wonderfully tiny, while the Miniature toaster is noticeably larger when Maid Mouse stands beside the two.

This is where the photographs really help. Rather than trying to imagine dimensions from a product description, you can see exactly how each one looks beside a 15 cm mouse.

The smaller version creates that lovely tiny-world feeling Maileg does so well, while the larger one can be easier for little hands to pick up and play with.

Either way, breakfast is served.

Lesson Four: The Lamps 💡

Now we come to one of our favourites — and the perfect example of why there are no strict rules at Mouse House Sizing School.

We prefer the Miniature lamp with our mice.

Yes, it's oversized.

And that's exactly why we love it.

Beside Maid Mouse, the larger lamp has a wonderfully cosy, storybook quality. It makes more of a statement in the room and somehow feels completely at home in our Mouse House.

The smaller Mouse lamp may be more technically in scale, but sometimes proportion isn't everything.

Choose the one that makes you smile.

Lesson Five: The Kitchens 🍳

The kitchen is where the difference in scale starts to become particularly interesting.

A smaller Mouse kitchen creates a wonderfully tiny cooking space, while a Miniature kitchen feels much more substantial beside Maid Mouse.

The larger size can also be lovely for younger children because doors, shelves and accessories can be easier for smaller hands to explore.

This is one comparison where we'd look at the photograph, think about the space you have available and consider how your child likes to play.

There doesn't need to be a right answer.

Lesson Six: The Fridges 🧊

Every Mouse House kitchen needs somewhere to keep the cheese.

The fridge is another great comparison for seeing the difference between Mouse and Miniature scale.

Beside our approximately 15 cm Maid Mouse, the smaller Mouse fridge has that wonderfully tiny Maileg feel, while the larger Miniature fridge becomes much more substantial — almost like the centrepiece of the kitchen.

The larger size can also be easier for smaller hands to open, arrange and play with.

And just like our kitchens and lamps, you don't necessarily have to choose the size you're supposed to.

Look at the two beside Maid Mouse, think about the space you have and choose the one that feels right in your little Maileg world.

After all, the most important thing is having somewhere to keep the cheese. 🐭🧀

Lesson Seven: The Wardrobes 👗

Every well-dressed mouse needs somewhere to keep their things.

This comparison is particularly fun because the two pieces have very different personalities.

The Mouse wardrobe is sweet and petite, while the larger Miniature wardrobe has the look of a grand old French armoire — the sort of beautiful antique cupboard you might imagine finding in an old country house.

Beside our 15 cm Maid Mouse, the difference in scale is easy to see.

The Miniature armoire is certainly oversized for a mouse, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Just like our Miniature lamp, a larger piece can bring a wonderfully grand, storybook feel to a Mouse House.

For Size 1 and 2 rabbits and bunnies, the larger Miniature scale also feels very natural.

So which would we choose?

For a tiny mouse bedroom, perhaps the little wardrobe. For a room that needs a beautiful statement piece, we'd be very tempted by the grand French-style armoire.

Sometimes a Mouse House needs a little grandeur. 🐭🤍

Lesson Eight: The Couches 🛋️

Perhaps the easiest way to choose a couch is to let the mice try it.

The smaller couch gives you that sweet, perfectly tiny Mouse House look.

The larger version gives everyone a little more room to gather — and can make a wonderful statement piece in a larger room.

This is another comparison where we wouldn't worry too much about what you're supposed to use.

Have a look at how your mice sit on each one and choose the Mouse House you'd rather curl up in.

So, Which Maileg Furniture Size Should You Choose?

Start with one very simple rule:

Mouse is smaller. Miniature is bigger.

After that, use the photographs.

Look at each piece beside our approximately 15 cm Maid Mouse and think about the space you're furnishing, the characters in your collection and the little hands that will be playing with them.

If you have Size 1 or 2 rabbits and bunnies, the larger Miniature pieces are generally a lovely scale for them.

If you're creating a tiny world around your mice, you may naturally gravitate towards the smaller Mouse pieces.

But don't be afraid to mix them.

We certainly do.

Sometimes the technically correct size isn't the one that looks best in your Mouse House.

And sometimes a mouse simply deserves an enormous bathtub and an oversized lamp.

That's part of the fun.

Creating Your Own Little Maileg World 🤍

One of the loveliest things about Maileg is that a collection can grow slowly.

It might begin with one mouse and a bed.

Then comes a kitchen. A bathtub. A lamp beside the bed. A couch for afternoon tea. A pram waiting by the door.
