Mouse House Adventures #2 | Taronga Zoo, Sydney

Adventure #2

Taronga Zoo, Sydney

Two tiny mice. One gentle giant. A wonderful day to remember.

Before we had even stepped through the gates of Taronga Zoo, two very small travellers found themselves sitting in the hand of a giant silverback gorilla.

From where they sat, the zoo stretched out before them like a whole new world waiting to be explored.

It felt like the perfect beginning to another Mouse House Adventure.

After spending a few wonderful days exploring Sydney with our family, we packed Big Brother and Big Sister Mouse into a tiny backpack and headed across the harbour to one of Australia's most iconic attractions.

What we discovered was far more than just a zoo.

It became one of those places we'll be talking about long after the trip had ended.

A Place Like No Other

Before arriving, we imagined a beautiful zoo filled with incredible animals.

What surprised us most was the setting itself.

Built into the side of a steep hillside overlooking Sydney Harbour, Taronga Zoo feels wonderfully different from any other zoo we've visited.

The winding pathways lead you through magnificent established gardens, towering trees and natural sandstone outcrops that are almost as spectacular as the animals themselves.

There are plenty of stairs—our little mice certainly noticed them—but every climb rewarded us with another breathtaking view across the harbour.

Every now and then we'd turn a corner and catch another glimpse of ferries gliding across the sparkling water below.

It is hard to believe you are only minutes from the centre of Sydney.

The whole place feels peaceful, spacious and beautifully connected to nature.

If you're visiting Sydney, Taronga Zoo is one experience we'd happily recommend to families, animal lovers and anyone wanting to experience one of the most beautiful settings of any zoo in Australia.

A Day Filled with Incredible Wildlife

Our first stop was the graceful giraffes.

Standing high against the Sydney skyline, they seemed impossibly tall. The mice stood quietly beneath them, craning their tiny necks as the gentle giants wandered gracefully through their enclosure.

Not long afterwards we met the mighty lions.

Fortunately, they appeared much more interested in enjoying an afternoon nap than two curious little mice watching from nearby.

As we continued exploring, we discovered sleepy koalas resting high amongst the gum trees, relaxed kangaroos enjoying the winter sunshine, wonderfully calm capybaras, curious Tasmanian Devils and even a cheerful group of chickens wandering happily about.

Every corner of the zoo seemed to reveal another memorable encounter.

Then came one of the highlights of the entire day.

The Australian seals.

We could have watched them for hours.

Seeing the World Through Little Eyes

Travelling with our Maileg mice reminds us to slow down.

The pathways feel longer.

The trees grow taller.

The flowers become gardens.

Every little detail suddenly seems worth noticing.

Perhaps that is the greatest lesson our little travellers teach us.

There is always magic waiting to be discovered when we take the time to look a little closer.

A Place We'd Love to Visit Again

As the afternoon drew to a close, neither we nor the mice were quite ready to leave.

One thing we discovered before heading home was Taronga Zoo's beautiful Wildlife Retreat and glamping accommodation overlooking Sydney Harbour.

After seeing it for ourselves, we all agreed on one thing.

Next time we'd love to slow down even more and spend the night overlooking Sydney Harbour.

Imagine waking up to the sounds of the zoo, watching the sun rise across the harbour and beginning another Mouse House Adventure without ever leaving the grounds.

We have a feeling we'll be back.

Perhaps our gentle silverback friend will still be waiting to welcome two tiny travellers home again.

Until the Next Adventure

As Big Brother and Big Sister Mouse climbed back into their little backpack, their feet were tired, their hearts were full and another wonderful memory had been added to their growing collection of adventures.

Every Mouse House Adventure reminds us that the destination is only half the story.

The real magic is found in slowing down, sharing the journey with the people we love and seeing familiar places through little eyes.

We hope you've enjoyed coming along with us.

Until the next adventure…

Keep looking for magic in the little things. 🤎
