Mouse House Guide: Creating a Beautiful Maileg Home on a Budget
One of the questions I'm asked most often is:
"What dollhouse should I buy for my Maileg mice?"
There are so many beautiful dollhouses available, but if you're just starting your collection, I don't think you need to spend hundreds of dollars on a house to create something magical.
Recently, I assembled the IKEA FLISAT Dollhouse, and I have been genuinely impressed.
At just AUD $59.99 from IKEA Australia, it offers exceptional value for money. The quality exceeded my expectations, it was straightforward to assemble and, best of all, it allows you to spend more of your budget on the things that truly bring a Mouse House to life—your Maileg mice, furniture and all those wonderful little accessories that make every room feel loved.

Every Mouse House Needs a Supervisor
Of course, no Mouse House project would be complete without a little supervision.
Pudding was determined to oversee the entire build, carefully inspecting every stage of the assembly and making sure everything met the very highest Mouse House standards. Whether he was checking the instructions or sitting patiently beside the finished house, it was clear he considered himself the project manager!

A Beautiful Blank Canvas
One of the things I love most about the FLISAT Dollhouse is its simplicity.
Made from natural timber, it has a beautiful Scandinavian style that pairs perfectly with the Maileg aesthetic. It's equally suited to a child's playroom or displayed as part of a collector's Mouse House.
The best part is that it's completely customisable.
You can paint it, wallpaper it, add flooring, install miniature lighting or decorate each room however you like.
For now, though, I've decided to leave mine exactly as it is.
I really love the warmth of the natural timber, and I think it complements the Maileg furniture beautifully. I may personalise it with wallpaper in the future, but at the moment I'm enjoying its clean, timeless look.

Four Rooms Full of Stories
For my first Mouse House, I created four cosy rooms:
🏡 Kitchen
🛋️ Lounge
🛏️ Bedroom
🛁 Bathroom
Rather than decorating with only one furniture range, I decided to mix Maileg Mouse-sized furniture with Maileg Miniature furniture.
The combination works beautifully.
Some pieces suit the mice perfectly, while others help create rooms that feel warm, layered and naturally collected over time. It also gives you much more flexibility when styling your home and proves there really are no rules when creating a Mouse House.
Choose the pieces you love and let your imagination do the rest.

Spend Your Budget Where It Matters
One of the biggest advantages of choosing an affordable dollhouse like the FLISAT is that it leaves more room in your budget for the things that really bring your Mouse House to life.
Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on the house itself, you can invest in:
- Maileg mice
- Maileg Mouse-sized furniture
- Maileg Miniature furniture
- Tiny accessories
- Miniature food
- Tricycles and adventure pieces
- Seasonal decorations
Those little details are what transform a dollhouse into a home filled with stories.

Wall Mounted or Freestanding
Another feature I really like is its versatility.
The FLISAT Dollhouse can be displayed on a shelf or securely mounted on a wall, making it a wonderful choice for children's bedrooms, playrooms or as part of a growing Maileg collection.
As your collection grows, the house can grow with it.

My Final Thoughts
If you're looking for an affordable first dollhouse for your Maileg collection, I think the IKEA FLISAT Dollhouse is an excellent place to start.
It's beautifully made, offers outstanding value for money and gives you complete freedom to create a Mouse House that's uniquely yours.
Most importantly, it lets you spend your budget where it really matters—on the mice, furniture and tiny details that bring every room to life.
Sometimes the most magical Mouse Houses don't begin with the biggest budget. They begin with imagination, creativity and a collection built one tiny treasure at a time.
Have you created a Mouse House using the IKEA FLISAT Dollhouse, or are you thinking about starting one? I'd love to see your creations. Share them with us on Instagram by tagging @mousehousecollective.au and inspire other collectors to begin their own Mouse House journey.
