Mouse House Guide: Why Maileg Princess & the Pea Is a Perfect Place to Start

If someone asks me where to start with Maileg, Princess & the Pea is always one of the first sets that comes to mind.

Not simply because she is beautiful, but because everything needed to begin a little story is already inside the box.

A mouse.

A castle.

A bed piled high with tiny mattresses.

And, hidden amongst them all, one very important little pea.

There is no need to already own a Maileg house or work out which furniture fits which mouse. Open the box and the story can begin.

That is why Maileg Princess & the Pea Big Sister Mouse remains one of my favourite starter sets and such a lovely introduction to the world of Maileg.

A Whole Little World in One Box

One of the questions we hear when someone is discovering Maileg for the first time is:

Where do I start?

It is easy to understand why.

There are mice in different sizes, houses, beds, kitchens, tables, chairs, clothes and an ever-growing collection of tiny accessories.

It can feel as though you need to create an entire Mouse House before the first story can begin.

You really don't.

And Princess & the Pea is a wonderful example of why.

The mouse is there.

Her little castle is there.

Her bed and mattresses are there.

And the story is already waiting.

It feels less like buying a single Maileg toy and more like opening a complete little play world.

The Little Story Behind the Pea

Maileg's Princess Mouse is inspired by The Princess and the Pea, the much-loved fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, first published in 1835.

The story is wonderfully simple.

A young woman arrives at a castle claiming to be a real princess. To discover whether she truly is one, the Queen secretly places a tiny pea beneath a great pile of mattresses.

The following morning, the princess explains that she has barely slept because something beneath the mattresses made her terribly uncomfortable.

Only a true princess, the story tells us, could possibly be quite so sensitive.

A tiny pea, an enormous pile of mattresses and a princess in a castle.

It is almost as though the story was waiting for Maileg.

From a Crocheted Princess to Princess Mouse

Princess & the Pea has been part of the Maileg world for more than twenty years.

The story first appeared in the Maileg collection in 2004, with a hand-crafted crocheted princess resting on a wooden bed piled with six tiny mattresses. Hidden amongst them was one tiny hand-knitted pea.

Over the years, Maileg continued to reinterpret Hans Christian Andersen's much-loved fairy tale. Rabbits eventually stepped into the role of the princess, followed by the first mouse version in 2016.

Since then, Princess Mouse has appeared in different dresses, castle colours have changed and beautiful new fabrics and details have been introduced with each interpretation.

For collectors, looking back at these earlier editions offers a lovely glimpse into how Maileg's style has evolved over more than two decades.

Yet the idea at the heart of Princess & the Pea has remained wonderfully simple:

A little character, a pile of mattresses and one tiny pea — everything needed for a story to begin.

Why It Is One of My Favourite Maileg Starter Sets

For me, this is where Princess & the Pea really shines.

If you're buying a first Maileg mouse, it can sometimes be difficult to know what else you need.

Do you need a house?

Which bed fits?

Do you need furniture?

Should you buy accessories at the same time?

With Princess & the Pea, you don't need to solve any of that before the first story can begin.

Everything works together from the moment the box is opened.

For a child receiving Maileg for the first time, that makes it wonderfully simple.

And for parents, grandparents or anyone choosing a Maileg gift, it means you can give one beautiful set knowing there is already enough inside for imaginative play.

No Mouse House required.

No furniture required.

No enormous collection required.

Just open the little castle and begin.

The Castle Is Part of the Play

One of my favourite things about Princess & the Pea is that the packaging isn't simply something to throw away.

The illustrated castle becomes part of her little world.

It gives Princess Mouse somewhere to sleep and somewhere for the original fairy tale to begin, while the mattresses add all those wonderful layers and textures that Maileg does so beautifully.

For a first Maileg set, that matters.

A child immediately has a character and somewhere for that character to live.

And because it is all contained within one little set, it is also a lovely option when you don't have space for a larger Maileg house.

One Little Box, So Many Stories

Of course, children don't have to follow the original Princess & the Pea fairy tale.

That's where the real fun begins.

Perhaps Princess Mouse really is trying to sleep on top of all those mattresses.

Perhaps the castle becomes her permanent home.

Perhaps another mouse arrives for a sleepover.

The mattresses might become beds for visiting mice.

The castle might become a school, a shop or something completely different tomorrow.

Or perhaps Princess Mouse packs a tiny suitcase, leaves the castle behind and heads off on an adventure.

That is one of the things I love most about Maileg.

The story gives children somewhere to start, but never tells them where they have to finish.

And When the Mouse House Begins to Grow...

Princess & the Pea works beautifully on her own.

But she doesn't become redundant if a Maileg collection starts to grow.

Quite the opposite.

Princess Mouse can eventually leave her castle and become part of an entire Mouse House world.

She can make friends with Big Brother and Big Sister Mouse.

She can acquire a favourite chair or table.

She might move into a Maileg house.

Her mattresses can become part of another bedroom.

And, before long, the little princess who began inside one castle has become another character in a much bigger family story.

That is why I particularly like sets like this as a starting point.

You can begin small and let the Mouse House grow naturally.

There is no need to buy everything at once.

A Beautiful First Maileg Gift

Princess & the Pea is also one of those Maileg sets that feels particularly special to give.

There is something lovely about opening the little castle and discovering an entire miniature scene waiting inside.

For a birthday, Christmas or a child's first introduction to Maileg, it feels like a complete gift rather than the beginning of a shopping list.

And I think that's worth remembering when choosing Maileg.

You don't need to create an enormous collection on day one.

Choose one beautiful piece that gives a child somewhere to begin.

Let them play.

Watch which characters and stories they love.

And allow the collection to grow from there.

Sometimes the loveliest Mouse Houses begin with just one mouse.

For the Maileg Collector

Princess & the Pea isn't only lovely for children beginning their first Maileg collection.

For collectors, its long history has another appeal.

Because Maileg has returned to the design over many years, the different versions create a little timeline of Maileg style.

The dresses change.

The fabrics change.

The castles change.

The mattresses change.

Even the pea has changed.

Seeing older editions beside newer ones is a lovely reminder that part of Maileg's charm comes from the way familiar ideas are continually reimagined rather than simply repeated.

You might have a favourite from years ago.

Or perhaps the current Princess will be the one that begins your collection.

Either way, she has become a rather special little part of Maileg history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Maileg Princess & the Pea a good first Maileg set?

Yes. It is one of our favourite Maileg starter sets because so much of the little world is already included.

You have Big Sister Mouse, her castle-style setting, bed, mattresses and the all-important pea, so imaginative play can begin without needing to purchase a Maileg house or additional furniture first.

What size mouse is included with Maileg Princess & the Pea?

Princess & the Pea includes a Big Sister Mouse.

This makes Princess easy to incorporate into a growing Maileg mouse family and compatible with many accessories designed for Maileg mice.

Do I need a Maileg house for Princess & the Pea?

Not at all.

That's one of the reasons we love this set for beginners.

The castle creates a little home and play setting of its own, so there is no need to purchase a separate Maileg house.

If the collection grows later, Princess Mouse can move into a larger Mouse House or simply travel between the two.

What age is Maileg Princess & the Pea suitable for?

The current Maileg Princess & the Pea set is recommended for children aged 3 years and over.

Always check the age recommendation on the individual product before purchasing, particularly when choosing Maileg for younger children.

Has Maileg Princess & the Pea changed over the years?

Yes.

Maileg's first Princess and the Pea appeared in 2004, featuring a hand-crafted crocheted princess resting on a wooden bed with six tiny mattresses and a hand-knitted pea hidden amongst them.

Over the years, Maileg has continued to reinterpret the much-loved fairy tale, with rabbits and eventually mice taking their turn as the princess.

The characters, clothing, colours, mattresses, castle designs and tiny details have changed, but the heart of the story has remained wonderfully familiar — one little princess, a very tall pile of mattresses and one tiny pea.

Is Princess & the Pea only for collectors?

Definitely not.

While the changing designs make older editions interesting to collect, the real beauty of Princess & the Pea is imaginative play.

Children can follow the traditional fairy tale or completely reinvent the story and take Princess Mouse on adventures of their own.

Can I add other Maileg mice and furniture later?

Absolutely.

That's one of the reasons Princess & the Pea works so well as a starting point.

Big Sister Mouse can eventually join other Maileg mice, use compatible furniture and accessories and become part of a much larger Mouse House collection.

Until Next Time...

The Maileg Princess & the Pea reminds us that a beautiful little world doesn't need to begin with an enormous dollhouse or a room filled with furniture.

Sometimes it begins with one little mouse.

A pile of tiny mattresses.

One very important pea.

And an imagination ready to decide what happens next.

Today Princess Mouse might be tucked beneath her blankets, wondering why she can't possibly get comfortable.

Tomorrow she might leave her castle to visit another mouse, pack a tiny suitcase for an adventure or find herself becoming part of a much bigger Mouse House family.

That is the beauty of beginning with a set like Princess & the Pea.

The first story is already waiting inside the box.

Every story after that belongs to the child who opens it.

Happy collecting, and may your Mouse House continue to grow with warmth, kindness and all the little everyday moments that make a house feel like home.
