Mouse House Story: Our Favourite Maileg Christmas Traditions
There is something truly magical about Christmas through the eyes of a child.

For our family, Maileg has become part of those traditions.
What began more than eight years ago with just a few special mice has slowly grown into a Mouse Mansion filled with tiny furniture, miniature decorations and magical little details that seem to come alive every December.
One New Treasure Every Christmas Eve
Every family has traditions.
One of ours takes place on Christmas Eve.
Each year, we add one new Maileg treasure to our collection.
Sometimes it's a festive mouse.
Other years it's a new piece of furniture, a tiny accessory or something special to complete a little corner of the Mouse Mansion.
Our choice usually depends on three things:
- The beautiful new Maileg Christmas collection.
- Which rooms still need a little love.
- And, of course... the Christmas budget!
What started as a simple tradition has become one of the moments we look forward to most each year.
A Scandinavian Christmas in the Queensland Summer
Every December, while we decorate our Christmas tree, the Mouse Mansion receives its own Christmas makeover.
Even though Christmas in Queensland often means bright sunshine and temperatures over 40 degrees, inside our little Mouse House it's always winter.
We imagine our mice living in the Northern Hemisphere, celebrating a snowy Scandinavian Christmas.
Mum and Dad Mouse bundle into their cosy winter knits before heading off on tiny skis through the snow.
Grandpa Mouse stays happily tucked inside beside the fireplace, warming his paws around a mug of hot chocolate while watching the world outside.
Tiny pixies, angel mice and festive decorations fill every corner, while little red wooden wagons wait patiently for Christmas adventures.
It's a world that exists only in our imagination—but somehow feels wonderfully real.
Building a Tiny Winter Village
One of our favourite Christmas traditions is styling the top of our Mouse Mansion bookcase.
Each year it becomes a miniature Scandinavian winter village.
Snow-covered trees.
Tiny lanterns.
Warm string lights.
Little festive scenes tucked into every corner.
Every year we add another little detail, slowly building a magical Christmas display inspired by the timeless Nordic charm that first made us fall in love with Maileg.
It feels peaceful.
It feels nostalgic.
And every year it feels like coming home.
The Magic Isn't the Collection
People often ask whether we've finished collecting.
The truth is...
We hope we never do.
One of the things we love most about Maileg is that there's no rush.
There's no finish line.
The joy comes from slowly adding new pieces, creating new stories and letting every mouse, chair and tiny suitcase become part of your family's memories.
Some of our favourite conversations have happened while rearranging tiny furniture, deciding which mouse sleeps in which bedroom or styling Christmas scenes together.
Those moments are worth far more than the collection itself.
Why We Started Mouse House Collective
Like many families, we've realised Christmas isn't really about perfection.
It's about slowing down.
Using your imagination.
Creating traditions.
Making memories that children carry with them long after they've grown up.
That's one of the reasons Mouse House Collective was born.
We wanted to create a place where families across Australia could discover the same joy we've found in building magical little worlds together—one tiny mouse, one festive accessory and one Christmas tradition at a time.
Our Favourite Tradition Continues
The Mouse Mansion changes a little every year.
New furniture appears.
A new mouse moves in.
Another tiny Christmas decoration finds its place.
But one tradition never changes.
