There Really Are No Rules in Mouse House Village

Today was one of those days that had been on my to-do list for a while...

The Mouse House was completely emptied.

Every tiny piece of furniture, every little mouse, every basket and accessory came out so I could give everything a good clean. It was amazing how much dust had found its way into our little village!

Of course, no project at Mouse House Collective is complete without Pudding. He appointed himself Chief Supervisor for the day, making sure every box was inspected and every mouse was accounted for. I'm not convinced he did much actual work, but he certainly looked important. 🐾

As I carefully unpacked everything, something unexpected happened.

Without even thinking about it, I started grouping all of the pieces by colour.

Soft blush pinks.

Gentle mint greens.

Warm beiges.

Seeing them all together reminded me just how beautiful the Maileg colour palette really is. Every piece feels thoughtfully designed, and every colour seems to complement the next. It was almost too pretty to put everything back!

It made me wonder...

Do you colour-coordinate your Maileg collection, or do you simply collect the pieces you fall in love with?

Personally, I love mixing everything together. That's part of the charm. Nothing feels like it has to match perfectly because somehow it all just works.

While I was rearranging everything, I found myself thinking about something else that often comes up when people first discover Maileg—the different sizes.

If you're just starting your collection, my advice is simple...

Don't get too caught up in getting every size exactly right.

Our Mouse House is actually a mixture of Maileg mouse furniture and miniature dollhouse furniture.

Why?

Because when we first started collecting, I honestly didn't understand all the different scales. I bought pieces simply because I loved them.

At first I wondered if I'd made a mistake.

Now, I wouldn't change a thing.

In fact, I think the slightly larger miniature furniture is easier to handle, especially when you're styling scenes or little hands are playing. Once everything is together, it creates a charming, lived-in village that feels full of personality rather than perfectly measured.

After all, if mice really lived inside a bookcase, would everything be perfectly to scale?

Probably not.

In our little world, Chef Gaston simply stands on a small stool to reach the stove, and everyone carries on as though that's perfectly normal.

And honestly... it makes us smile every time we see it.

By the end of the afternoon, every mouse had found its way back home. The furniture was back in place, the flowers were arranged, and Pudding gave the village one final inspection before settling down for a well-earned nap.

Is it perfect?

Not even close.

There are still little corners I'd like to improve, new pieces I'd love to add and scenes I'd like to create.

But perhaps that's the magic of Mouse House Village.

It's always a work in progress.

Just like the best homes are.
